Blood Type Diet
Naturopath Peter D’Adamo invented this controversial diet which says people should chose what they eat depending on their blood groups. The human race is divided into four blood Groups, O, A, B and AB. By following the food most suited to your blood group the theory is that you lose weight, feel healthier and reduce your risk of disease.
According to Dr D’Adamo, the blood Group O which is the commonest blood group is also the oldest. It comes down from prehistoric times when men were hunters. Hence the diet of those belonging to Group O should be rich in proteins and fats as their body is used to it.
The next group to evolve was A and then AB during the days of agrarian society, when farming was the important occupation. The persons of these groups will do well on a vegetarian diet with grains and heavy on carbohydrates. People of Group B which appeared last will find that a mixed diet will work best as the group is a balance of A and O.
His theory is that a person with type B blood cannot burn the fat in red meat as efficiently as a type O can. Likewise, a type B person does not burn carbohydrates as fast as a type A does. Hence, by choosing suitable foods according to the blood group, a person can determine the most efficient diet and hence avoid unnecessary overload.
Needless to say doctors and even most other naturopaths do not support these theories but there are followers of the Blood Group Diet who swear by its efficacy.
