Protein Power Diet
As the name implies, the Protein Power Diet comprises of a diet that comprises more of protein and less of carbohydrates and fats. With this diet, people find that they feel healthier and helped them lose weight.
With an increased intake of protein in the body, the body metabolism tends to increase. This is because the human body is designed to handle high levels of protein. With a low fat and high carbohydrate diet, an overproduction of insulin develops that tends to regulate the storage of fat in the body. This in turn leads to diseases like obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease and some forms of cancer.
The Protein Power Diet is divided into three phases; the intervention phase, the transition phase and the maintenance phase. During the intervention phase, your protein requirements are determined while your intake of carbohydrates is restricted. You can determine your protein requirements through a formula or chart. It is ok to restrict your intake of carbohydrates to 7-10 grams of carbohydrates for each meal.
Your required amount of proteins and carbohydrates has to be divided in the three meals of a day. You have to avoid Trans fat in the diet; however, omega-3 fatty acids and omega-6 polyunsaturates like corn oil are permissible. This phase if for as long as you achieve your health objectives like normal blood pressure and glucose and triglycerides and till your weight is normal.
All carbohydrates are restricted in the Protein Power Diet. However instead of eating complex carbohydrates like rice and pasta eat vegetables or fruits so that you obtain maximum nutrition from the carbs. You switch to the transition phase once you achieve your weight or health objectives wherein your carbohydrate intake is increased to 15 – 20 grams per day. Focus on vegetables and fruits containing high nutritional content for your carbohydrates. This phase has to be continued for one or two months till your goals are maintained with a little more carbohydrates added to the diet.
The maintenance diet is forever wherein you raise your carbohydrate intake till your health and weight are stable. You do this by adding about five grams of carbohydrates per meal and snack in a week. This phase is maintained with the objective of maintaining health and weight. Once you reach the maintenance phase of the Protein Power Diet, you would have reached your ideal weight and health conditions. |
