Renal Diet
The Renal diet is basically not a weight reduction diet. This is a diet which is low protein based and is used for people having abnormal kidney functions. With the Renal diet, the worsening of kidney disease is prevented. The Renal diet is also known as the kidney disease diet.
Renal diet is a diet that is low in potassium and sodium. Sometimes fluid restriction too may be needed. And if you are diabetic with kidney disease, carbohydrate consumption too has to be limited in the Renal diet. With a Renal diet, the stress on the kidney is reduced considerably.
With the restriction of proteins in the diet, the load on the kidney is reduced so kidney disease progresses slowly. The restriction of sodium in the Renal diet improves control of blood pressure and avoids fluid retention. The restriction of potassium prevents dangerous heart rhythms in the body. The physician will advise you on how much restrictions you have to make to proteins, sodium, potassium and urea through tests.
It is also necessary to control your intake of calcium and phosphorus in the Renal diet. This is because phosphorus levels increase and calcium levels may decrease with a kidney disease. So you have to adjust your intake of foods containing these minerals in the Renal diet. Sometimes, supplements and medications may be needed.
In the Renal diet, most of your calories have to come from complex carbohydrates and not proteins. Use monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats in your meals. It is always better to approach a dietician for the right diet steps to be taken in a Renal diet, to prevent any future complications due to the diet.
The Renal diet is the best means of slowing or preventing most kidney diseases. It is better to consume abut 0.6g/kg/day of protein in a Renal diet. Depending on the case of your kidney disease, the intake of dairy products and other phosphorus rich food has to be reduced. As kidney failure tends to reduce the amount of urine production in the body, you may have to reduce your fluid intake in the Renal diet. |
