Nia
The Fusion Fitness of Nia
Nia or Neuromuscular Integrative Action is a form of fusion fitness that is aimed at bringing out the dancer, martial artist, and highly aware person who exist in all of us. It is a combination of two or more classic movement forms and encompasses the martial arts, the healing arts, and dance arts. Its exponents believe that the merging of these creates a synergy that surpasses any individual technique.
Started over two decades ago by Debbie and Carlos Rosas, Nia is done with bare feet and has no repetitive movements. It brings in physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well being according to its practitioners who believe there are three levels of intensity in every movement. Nia has a range of motion and can be adapted to suit all levels of fitness.
The three planes promote cellular action, with expansion and contraction of the entire body. Every movement relaxes the body and mind, establishing dynamic-ease, grounding and connectedness, regardless of speed or intensity. Imagery promotes natural whole body motion, bringing the person in touch with his inner self.
Nia is believed to be a lot like the Tao and cannot be defined by a single word or phrase. It is a form of self expression that is always evolving and changing. Every exponent of Nia brings to this unique form of fitness his or her own individual contribution in style, expression and emotion.
This cardiovascular form of fitness does not believe in painful movements and is based on the "Pleasure Principle." Nia supports a atmosphere of continuing pleasure, teaches one to fully enjoy each movement and moment and encourages sensations of comfort, balance, joy and love.
